A smoothie? A yogurt? Or a smoothie yogurt? Mango lassi is a creamy Indian yogurt-based drink that you can quickly whip up like a smoothie. If you’re a big fan of mango, you’ve got to try this! Have this on the hottest day or whenever you just want a sweet and yet still refreshing healthy drink.

What is Indian Lassi?

Originated in the lands of Punjab in India, Indian lassi is a popular refreshing yogurt drink throughout the country. In the hot sweltering summer in India, you can see Indian lassi almost everywhere. Traditionally served in “Matkas” – earthen pots, this Indian drink is even considered one of the oldest smoothie. Originally, it was made either sweet or salty, nowadays, lassi is now made in every flavor imaginable!

Aside from numerous flavors, there are a lot of variations for this drink, some of them are:

  • Namkeen Lassior Salted Lassi –has a lot of similarities to Turkish Ayran or Doogh – a salty drink popular in the middle east that is often servedalongside a spicy meal.
  • Sweet Lassi – probably the most popular variation, is kinda like a hybrid of a smoothie and milkshake. This is often made with various fruits, yogurt, and different ingredients.
  • Chaas – a salty/buttermilk variation of lassi with a thinner consistency.
  • Pudina Lassi – or Mint Lassi – is a salty lassi and can be made in different variations. Traditional Mint Lassi is often made with yogurt, mint, and different spices like cumin, cardamon, green chili, salt, black pepper, and sometimes also cucumber.

Mango is considered as “king of fruits” in India because of its sweet taste and is commonly used as a dessert or refreshment. Aside from its delectable taste, mangoes are known to have a lot of health benefits.

  1. Lowers cholesterol level – mangoes contain high levels of fiber pectin and vitamin C that may lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol or known as the “bad cholesterol”.
  2. Healthy skin– vitamin A and C are found in mangoes; these two vitamins are important for promoting healthy skin and aids in skin repair. So it’s basically helping your skin from the inside.
  3. Boosts immunity– packed with a lot of vitamins, mangoes can help strengthens your immune system.
  4. Aids in digestion– known as a low calorie and a high-fiber fruit, this fruit is definitely good for digestion and will do wonders for your gut health.
  5. Promotes eye health – rich in beta-carotene which helps with the production of vitamin A. This vitamin plays a vital role in maintaining a clear cornea as well as components of rhodopsin, a protein in the eyes that allows us to see in low light conditions.
  6. Helps with weightloss – when eaten with moderation, mango can help with weight loss. It is filling and is rich in dietary fibers.

Ingredients for Vegan Mango Lassi:

  • mango (fresh or frozen)
  • vegan yogurt (e.g. soy or coconut)
  • non-dairy milk or exotic fruit juice
  • fresh ginger
  • agave syrup or other syrup
  • lemon juice
  • turmeric

How to make Vegan Mango Lassi

Do you have five minutes? If you have, then you can definitely do this delicious vegan mango lassi. Here’s how you can make this Indian yogurt drink refreshment:

  1. Cut the mango as shown in the recipe video.
  2. In a blender, put all your ingredients. Blend until creamy. If you want to add a little sweetness, put some agave syrup, and enjoy!

Get creative: Lassi Recipe Variations

Indian lassi is a very versatile refreshment, you can practically swap it out with any fruits that you like, add toppings like dark chocolate, fruit bits, and more! You can also try different kinds of yogurt and fruit juices. Now if you want a little spritz in your lassi, you can also add sparkling water to give your vegan mango lassi a twist!

  • Use Mango or other fruit. Feel free to add other exotic fruits such as pineapple, nectarines, peaches, apricots, oranges for variation or blend a mixture of fruits together.
  • Frozen or fresh fruit?Frozen fruit will create an even thicker and creamier mango lassi consistency and makes a great refreshing slush drink for summer!
  • Which kind of Milk and Yogurt? In this recipe, I like to use coconut milk or fruit juice (e.g. pineapple, orange, or mango juice) and coconut yogurt because it gives the lassi an even more exotic touch, but you can use other products as well.
  • Want more protein? Add vegan protein powder if you want the lassi to be richer in protein.
  • Make a Milkshake! Simply replace the dairy-free yogurt with vegan vanilla ice cream to turn this mango lassi into a rich milkshake.

Ingredients

  • 1 mango approx. 500 g, weight including core, or 350 g frozen mango cubes
  • 120 g vegan yogurt e.g. soy or coconut
  • 80 ml cold non-dairy milk or exotic fruit juice *see notes
  • 1 small piece of ginger optionally to taste
  • 1 tsp agave syrup or other syrup, optional to taste
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp turmeric optional

Instructions

  • Cut the mango as shown in the recipe video.

  • Then simply put all ingredients in a blender and blend until creamy. Sweeten to taste with agave syrup and enjoy!

Notes

  • Mango/fruit: If you like, you can add other exotic fruits such as pineapple, nectarines, peaches, apricots, oranges for variation or blend a mixture of fruits together.
  • Frozen or fresh fruit?Frozen fruit makes the lassi even thicker and creamier and makes a great refreshing drink for the summer!
